Role of Auxin Response Factor17 in Anther Development and its Dehiscence in Arabidopsis

 


Auxin plays an important role in male reproductive development. Both auxin biosynthesis and transportation are involved in pollen development. Auxin Response Factors (ARFs) respond to auxin; ARFs can be targeted to auxin response elements of downstream genes and can function as transcriptional activators or repressors. Several ARFs are involved in anther development and pollen formation. ARF17 helps in pollen wall pattern formation, tapetum development, and auxin signal transduction in anthers. ARF17 is essential for primexine formation and pollen development by direct regulation of Cals5 gene expression in Arabidopsis. Its expression is regulated by miR160 which is critical for its function during anther development. ARF17 also regulates the expression of MYB108 for anther dehiscence. Thus, ARF17 expression has vital role in various stages of anther development and its dehiscence.
